Hidden Venice
- a photographic essay
With its hidden alleyways and timeworn façades, Venice appears to be the perfect city for romantic souls.
And yet, beneath all its beauty, Venice remains, unmistakably, a city.
A city that requires infrastructure, that produces waste, that must be maintained and kept alive.
Where, then, are the invisible people and quiet systems that make this fragile place continue to exist?
In this photographic work, I have turned my gaze toward the layers of Venice that usually slip past us - the parts unseen by visitors who come only for a few days.
We do not notice the garbage collectors in the pale light of dawn, the piles of refuse left on the streets at night, or the scent of the industrial harbor drifting from the mainland.
These photographs reveal moments that belong to Venice just as much as the gondolas with their singing men, or the gleaming expanse of Piazza San Marco.

Forgotten Objects
...
Silent questions linger in the air, untold stories, hushed-down tales,
only a sliver remains of what once breathed.
A relic waits at the roadside’s edge -
overgrown, forgotten, stepped past.
Yet still, they remain:
fragments shaping what becomes.
Entwined with vines that curl around their rigid stone flesh,
entwined with us -
our awkward step
catching on a rusting screw.
And so, they forge the new,
a place reborn from the power of the bygone,
the unanswered, the undefined.
They leave room for unknowing,
for the need not to know.
They are part of now -
a whisper of what once was.
We glimpse them
only from the corner of an eye…
So quiet,
so soft,
so beautiful.
